We love the transom doors in the building. Almost all doors in the building are original, such as this bedroom door.
Refurbished sink
We were able to save and refurbish the sink you can see in the previous photo. We're trying to save as many of the original details as possible, and all the bathrooms in the building feature vintage sinks that are original to the building.
How it looked before...
This photo shows what the bedroom in the previous blog post looked like before renovation.
The first apartment is ready for tenants!
The smallest of the six apartments at 172 Spruce Street is ready for tenants. The floors in this apartment were badly damaged (after the ceiling on this side of the building had collapsed one winter) and we had to choose whether to try to salvage the original floors, or put in new floors. We kept the floors, and many of the details in the apartment are original to the building, such as the trim work, wainscoting, bathroom sink, and transom doors. The windows are new, but custom-ordered to fit the historic profile of the building. We hope our new tenants will be happy in this space!
All vintage doors
We've been able to use all original doors throughout the apartment building. The only places where we've had some problems are in the apartments built to ADA standards, where the doors have to be wider than the original doors. We can buy new doors, but we prefer vintage. So far, we've been lucky and we've found vintage doors that will fit.
Evening walk
Going for an evening walk (in pajamas) along the rail trail. The rail trail, which you can see from the Milkint Building, is perfect for walks and bike rides.
Grand opening this weekend!
Ranger Jane's is a play store with toys and games that encourage creative and active play for kids and adults. We wish our retail tenants the very best and hope you can stop by to see what they have to offer!
172 Spruce Street, Thomas, WV. Monday through Thursday 10-5; Friday and Saturday 10-6; Sunday 12-5.
Going hiking
The town of Thomas has an abundance of hiking and biking trails just steps from the town center. Here, our son hikes the trail on the other side of the river, directly opposite Front Street.
Things we found in the walls
Things we found in the walls: old whiskey bottles and cigar boxes. Unfortunately, they were all empty :)
Happy Father's Day!
According to this vintage advertisement that we found in the retail space of our apartment building, all dad needs in order to enjoy the company of his kids is a good night's sleep on an Englander mattress. To all the sleep-deprived dads out there, Happy Father's Day!
